Energy Optimization of a Resort in Tuscany: A Project of Excellence
Energy optimization and comfort for a Tuscan resort with new heat pumps and a smart control system.A prestigious resort located in the heart of Tuscany has recently undertaken an ambitious project to renovate and optimize its thermal system, with the goal of improving energy efficiency and guest comfort.
Context and initial challenges
The building, made up of independent apartments with centralized domestic hot water production and district heating, featured an outdated system consisting of non-functioning on-off geothermal heat pumps and a gas boiler. In recent years, to meet summer cooling demands, the facility had temporarily installed an air-to-water heat pump, which was unable to cover the full cooling load. This reduced indoor comfort and limited the overall efficiency of the system. Additionally, the various components were not integrated and lacked access to web-based monitoring and management platforms.
The new technological solution
To address these challenges, an innovative centralized system was implemented, integrating:
- A machine room with a geothermal heat pump (85 kW)
- The existing air-to-water heat pump (30 kW)
- A supporting gas boiler (90 kW)
This combination provides a total output of 205 kW for heating and 138 kW for cooling, ensuring a balance between energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
Innovation in control and comfort
The system is managed by an advanced control platform, designed to coordinate and optimize the operation of the thermal plant’s generators and components, now capable of responding in real time to the building’s thermal needs. Additionally, the integration of dehumidifiers with the underfloor cooling system further enhances guest comfort during the summer months.
A project towards sustainability
This renovation not only reduces energy consumption but also reflects a tangible commitment to sustainability, in line with the goals of energy savings and environmental well-being.
With this intervention, the Tuscan resort stands out as a virtuous example of how innovation and technology can transform the hospitality sector—enhancing the guest experience while enabling the facility to maintain full control over the climate system, the thermal plant, and the individual apartments. Finally, the web platform provides the external maintenance team with real-time monitoring of all system variables.
